What Does ABS Actually Do?
ABS stands for Anti-Lock Braking System. Sensors monitor each wheel and tell the ABS computer when a wheel stops rotating while the vehicle still has forward speed. That usually means the brakes have overpowered the available traction at that wheel.
The ABS computer reacts by rapidly adjusting hydraulic brake pressure to allow the wheel to rotate again. This process repeats many times per second until the vehicle slows down or stops.
The ABS computer performs a self-test every time you cycle the ignition. If the system detects missing sensor data, a hydraulic pump problem, or a valve that is not responding correctly, it can illuminate the ABS warning light.
Why ABS Matters in Real Driving Conditions
Driving through rain, snow, slick pavement, gravel, or emergency braking situations can become more dangerous when ABS is not functioning properly.
Without ABS assistance, hard braking may cause wheel lock-up, reduced steering control, and longer stopping distances depending on road conditions.
